Opera in Savonlinna

To mark the centennial Parliament has commissioned a new opera in cooperation with the Savonlinna Opera Festival. It was ready in autumn 2006 and had its premiere at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in July 2007. The opera has been commissioned from composer Olli Kortekangas and director Michael Baran. They will also write the libretto.

The opera will follow the life of a Finnish family following the Second World War. The main characters will include persons born in the early part of the century, in the post-war period and in the 1970s. This will make it easier for people of all ages to identify with them.

The story will unfold through individual characters while reflecting the social and political scene and changing values. The opera will have a traditional form, with arias and chorus scenes.
