Election of speakers opened the 2010 parliamentary season

The Finnish Parliament has started its 2010 spring season. On February 2nd, the Parliament elected Speaker and two Deputy Speakers. The Speaker of the Parliament is Mr Sauli Niinistö. First Deputy Speaker is Mr Seppo Kääriäinen and second Deputy Speaker is Ms Tarja Filatov. Read more »

The Finnish Parliament recess runs from 19 December 2009 to 1 February inclusively. During this period the Parliament will not be sitting and there will be no parliamentary business, apart from two Grand Committee meetings. Read more »
Petri Jääskeläinen appointed new Parliamentary Ombudsman

Meeting in plenary session today 1.12.2009, the Eduskunta elected Doctor of Laws Petri Jääskeläinen as the new Parliamentary Ombudsman. His term will begin on 1.1.2010 and end on 31.12.2013. Read more »

The plenary debated the report of the Foreign Affairs Committee on Finland and the Arctic on 18 November 2009. The expectation is that the importance of and the interest in the Arctic and its natural resources will increase in the future. Read more »

Parliament House to undergo extensive renovations

The Finnish Parliament House, inlcuding the 1956 and 1978 annexes, are to undergo rood-to-cellar extensive renovations. The renovations will take place between 2009 and 2017. Read more »
Two votes on confidence this week

On 30 September the Eduskunta voted on the opposition's motion of censure about old people's care. The Government was given confidence with 111 votes against 64. Read more »

The autumn term has started

The Parliament of Finland has started its 2009 autumn term with three new MPs (in the photo from left to right: Pietari Jääskeläinen, Timo Juurikkala and Raimo Piirainen). They replace Timo Soini, Heidi Hautala and Liisa Jaakonsaari, who got elected to the European Parliament in June. Read more »
Annual Report 2007 published
The Annual Report of the Parliamentary Office 2007 is published. The report covers the Parliament legislative work, international and other activities as well as financial statements. Parliament's expenses totalled 91.1 million euros in 2007, which was 3,6% more than the year before. The increase is mainly due to renovation projects. Including operational and renovation expenses, as a legislative body Parliament cost 16.20 euros per citizen. Read more about Parliament's activities here  »
Universities can offer made-to-order education for a fee
The parliament has approved an amendment to the Universities and Polytechnics Act. The amendment provides the universities and polytechnics right to organize made-to-order degree education for citizens outside the European Economic Area. Made-to-order education may be arranged for a group but not for individual students. The education can be purchased by a legal person under private or public law, such as a limited company, an association, a foundation or a state, a municipality or a municipal consortium.
