The 2014 Parliamentary Session Opened

The Finnish Parliament has started its 2014 spring season. The opening of the parliamentary session was officially announced by the President of the Republic, Mr. Sauli Niinistö, on Tuesday 4th February. The opening speech was given by the Speaker, Mr. Eero Heinäluoma. Read more »

Eduskunta Approves Next Year's Budget

At its session on Friday, 20 December 2013 the Parliament of Finland approved next year's state budget, which totals about 54.1 billion euros. This includes 35.3 million euros that was added during parliamentary handling of the budget.
The budget shows a deficit of 7.2 billion euros. This will be covered by further borrowing, and as a result central government debt at the end of 2014 is estimated to reach about 100 billion euros. Read more »

The Finnish Parliament recess runs from 23 December 2013 to 2 February 2014 inclusively. During this period the Parliament will not be sitting and there will be no parliamentary business, apart from one scheduled Grand Committee meeting. Read more »
Foreign Affairs Committee calls for the effective implementation of Finland's UN strategy

The Foreign Affairs Committee welcomes the reform of the UN strategy. The strategy emphasizes that in the UN as well as other international organizations Finland should focus on matters that promote the values and objectives that are most important to us. The Committee considers it clear that Finland cannot participate in the handling of every matter on the UN's broad agenda (FAC 7/2013). Read more »

Resolution on the 150th Anniversary of Regular Legislative Work in Finland: Support to Russian Studies

At its Jubilee session on 18 September the Finnish Parliament contributed 10 million euros towards a new fund to support studies in Russian language and culture, particularly among young people. Read more »
